AUDREY's stripe bikini was a show stopper. On Friday afternoons, as her Nursing College had an early finish time she would jump on the bus home, find her matching sundress and within minutes step out onto the busy Curlewis Street road only a short walk to the golden sands of Bondi. After some rays, a quick shower, she would slip into her favourite dusty pink shift dress before heading out to her friends house for a night of music, dancing and her favourite drink... A Gibson.
EVA was always at the beach and she was almost always surfing. After the boom of surfing popularity in the late 1950’s, surfing contests starting popping up and this gave Eva more reason to get in the water. She saw herself as more of a ‘tomboy’ and preferred clothing that was overly feminine - except the bikini. Eva’s swimsuit was her most precious possession (especially because she didn’t own her surfboard) her swimsuit was what bonded her to the ocean.
STELLA and her family migrated from England to Australia as part of the ‘ten pound assisted passage scheme’, what we call ‘Ten Pound Poms’. Coming from a country that was culturally close to Australia was helpful, but nothing could have prepared her for the sights of Bondi Beach! Every weekend was spent on the beach - she would take her brothers and sisters for an ice cream and while they swam she would read her copy of Women’s Weekly and soak up the sun!
PEGGY was in love with her music. She would play her father’s records at home every evening but would have to settle for her portable radio when it was time to hit the beach. Peggy was known for drawing a crowd, mainly for starting dance competitions right on the beach (the twist, the stomp and the boogaloo were staple moves) or getting into heated debates over which was the better band ‘The Beach Boys’ or the ‘Beatles’. In the end, she would line up for hours just for the chance to see either one of the bands perform live!
HAZEL loved nothing more than escaping into the world of film at the local Bondi Siz Ways Theatre. She was particularly drawn to the glamorous stars of the era, dreaming of one day living a life as enchanting as theirs. On weekends, she would often meet friends for a matinee showing and gossip over milkshakes at the nearby diner afterwards.
CLARA was a regular at the local club and was well known for always ordering a Pina Colada - rain, hail or shine! Clara drove her and her friends around in her Volkswagen Beetle and was the envy of all. She was also known around town for always sporting her yellow polka dot bikini at the beach. People say that Bryan Hyland’s hit song ‘Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini’ was based on Clara, but they later discovered that she herself started that rumour.
VERA loved fashion and beauty, and worked as a sales clerk at a local clothing store. She would spend all of her spare time admiring the latest trends from the girls at Bondi, wander around the shops and circle inspiration in her copy of Vogue magazine. She took great pride in her appearance - her hair always voluminous and perfect. Whenever she would go to Bondi Beach she would refuse to get her hair wet but nothing could keep her from wearing her newest swimsuit.
GRETA was heavily involved in women rights, she marched, protested and pressured the government for equal rights in the workplace and other spheres of life like education and politics.
She was a big fan of Bob Dylan not only for his original folk-rock sounds but his message of social change. One of Greta’s favourite things to do was to head to Bondi Beach in her pink bikini and play a game of beach volleyball, followed by a serving of hot chips (served in newspaper, of course).
LOLA was a creative soul who would hand make her sundresses (on her cherished singer sewing machine), however she saved her money to purchase her own bikini from Waltons and she did not regret it! She would strut down to the beach and hang out with her girl friends, where they’d swoon over Paul Newman and talk about last nights episode of I Love Lucy.
FLORENCE was a fixture in the Bondi community, known for her warm smile and generous spirit. She spent her days volunteering at the local hospital and organizing charity events for those in need. In the evenings, she enjoyed taking long walks along the beach, marveling at the natural beauty of the coastline and feeling grateful for her peaceful life in Bondi.
